The short answer is: they are tools to surveil everything we do, like in the book “1984” by George Orwell, so that we lose our freedom and liberty once and for all, culling the world population (us) while doing so.
After analysing the UN’s Agenda 30 document in my blog post,

I’m convinced this conclusion fits perfectly in the bigger picture of how the ruling class is trying to shape our future, hoping we’ll find out only when it’s too late.
Outrageous? Crazy? Too far-fetched?
You’ll be the judge. I only ask you, dear Seeker, to read this post and look at the evidence I present you.
I’ll start by borrowing the following description of the 5G technology from the website 5G Appeal.
What is 5G – an introduction
5G signifies ‘5th generation’ wireless technology. It is said to provide faster and higher transmission capacity. It includes the Internet of Things (IoT), driverless cars, and faster video streaming.
5G will massively increase the microwave and millimeter wave radiation in our environment. It will also use new frequencies that are not evaluated by experts independent from industry as to their safety.
5G will include the higher millimeter wave frequencies, previously used for crowd control for instance. The millimeter waves do not travel easily through buildings so 5G will require millions of new “small cell” antennas.
The wireless telecom industry intend to outfit nearly all lamp post or utility post around the countries with these wireless small cell antennas beaming hazardous radiation next to, or into our homes, schools, working places and everywhere, 24/7.
5G radiation will be sent from advanced antennas, so called phased arrays, that transmit the microwaves and/or millimeter waves in narrow bands, a technology originally developed for military purposes. This will massively increase the exposure to radiation in those beams, that will be nearly everywhere. …
No evaluation of health effects nor of effects on the wildlife and the environment has been undertaken. There is no research showing safety neither from 5G alone, nor from the combined exposure to 5G + already existing radiation from GSM, 3G, WiFi, 4G etc.
What does this mean?
I would like you to ponder also on the following two questions:

Even UN staff members are concerned about it. Claire Edwards, who worked for the United Nations as Editor and Trainer in Intercultural Writing from 1999 to 2017, describes her experience in the article

I did my best to alert the UN staff union, administration and medical service to the danger to the health of UN staff of EMR from these access points, but was ignored. That’s why, in May 2018, I took the issue to the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres [ transcript]. He is a physicist and electrical engineer and lectured on telecommunications signals early in his career, yet asserted that he knew nothing about this. He undertook to ask the World Health Organization to look into it, but seven months later those public access points remain in place. I received no replies to my many follow-up emails.
Also called “autonomous cars”, driverless cars are cars that can move without a driver. I used to love this idea, because sometimes it was physically painful for me to drive.
However, my initial enthusiasm has been replaced by concern, for two main reasons:
Autonomous cars will need two things to operate safely: ultra-fast communication between nearby cars, things and the cloud, and near real-time data about their surroundings. Both DSRC and 4G LTE are fast.Both provide the connections to other vehicles and nearby things. But neither technology was designed for transmitting big data files really quickly. ….
But big data files are reason enough to align autonomous driving to 5G.
“Smart” Meters and the Internet of Things
When government from around the world push the same agenda all of a sudden, I get even more suspicious. That’s the case with fracking, 5G, vaccinations and “smart” meters.
Also, can you imagine how much your data can be worth to whoever steals it or sells it? Especially if your “smart” meter is connected to the 5G grid (which is where it is all going) and to all of your appliances (Internet of Things). They would know everything about you, I mean EVERYTHING.
In the UK, the 5G rollout is starting later this year targeting at first London, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Belfast, Birmingham and Manchester.
Later on, the second phase will include Glasgow, Newcastle, Liverpool, Leeds, Hull, Sheffield, Nottingham, Leicester, Coventry and Bristol.

A year ago, almost to the day, my science fiction novella Across Spacetime was launched. To celebrate this, I’ve interviewed Samir Bond, who, with Beatrice Blanche, is a main character in my book.
A: Hello Samir, how are you?
S: Hi Angela, I’m having a great time in London, away from Antarctica. Too cold for me down there. I can’t say that England is a warm place, but is still much better! People to see, places to visit… That’s my idea of paradise.
A: I see. I thought you enjoyed it very much on Mars as well, maybe even more than in London.
S: Yes, I did, still too cold though. It was an interesting phase of my life. For the first time I was off Earth without my family, doing something that was cutting-edge: making history or reliving history, to be precise. I felt special. When you live in an era in which almost everything has being discovered or invented, it’s very difficult to stand out in a big way.
A: Would you do it again?
S: Yes, I would. I met extraordinary people during the Spacetime Programme, from all over the solar system. How ironic that I had to travel back in time to meet Beatrice in London!
A: Yes, life is unpredictable. In the interview she gave me, Beatrice told me that she had a hard time in the past Earth because she had to remove all her implants, but once the withdrawal syndrome was over, she felt fine and didn’t need them anymore, not even when she went back to the future. So I was wondering, what was life in the past Earth for you?
S: Exciting and challenging. Another chance to show myself what I’m made of. Having to rely on my wits and not technology to solve my problems, that was exhilarating. Since I’ve come back from the past, I have reduced my dependence on it. Maybe that’s why I enjoy cooking so much, apart from starring in Across Spacetime of course.
A: You’ve helped me a lot when I was writing Across Spacetime. Is there something that you’d like me to have written differently?
S: Well, yes, actually. You made me say that I missed smart cities. And that was true. However, I’ve realised, too late, that you and your readers would have misunderstood what I meant. So thank you for the chance to put it right now. What I meant is that I missed the smart cities of my century, not the ones connected to a “smart” network, like the 5G one that governments around the world want to deploy in your point of the spacetime continuum. No, we refused to use them. Our ancestors decided against that technology because it was too risky for human and animal health. And also because it was the basis for implementing the so-called Internet of Things, that would have introduced an unprecedented level of surveillance on citizens without any legal reason for it and without full disclosure of the extent and scope of the surveillance. A true Orwellian society. I’m grateful that our ancestors stopped it before it was too late. I hope you’ll be able to do the same.
A: Thank you for this, Samir. Only recently, I’ve realised how dangerous the 5G network is. You're right, its introduction has nothing to do with increasing the speed and quality of our communications. I hope we’ll be able to stop it in this universe too. Can you tell me what is smart about your cities then?
S: Yes of course. In our cities, there is no pollution because we have free, clean energy, and no Homeless because everybody has a comfortable, nice place to call home. We care for one another; no one is left behind or excluded from our society. Everybody is given equal chances, but that doesn’t mean that we are equal. Meritocracy is essential in a just and happy society. I wish I could show you… Maybe in another book?
